Long Island Salt Pond Day 4 Land Excursion North Side

A little history about Long Island....it was orignally inhabited by Arawak/ Lucayan Indians. In the 1700's  British Loyalist from  the Carolinas and Virginia and  their slaves came and farmed the land. They also had large cattle and cotton plantations.
All over the Island you will find stone walls that were built by the slaves to divide the properties and the roads. ...Most of them are still standing and in good condition!
Stone wall with a big termite nest on it!

We went north this morning toward the Adderley's Plantation ruins. Built in 1790 by Abraham Adderley  from England. The plantation was ruined by a hurricane in 1927.
You had to drive down a skinny dirt road. Then you walked on the beach. Next you traveled through the brush...anyway it took a while to get there!

The kitchen

 the main building
We also explored the white cliffs on the Atlantic side...they were pretty awesome!

While driving around in the car we picked up a young girl that was hitchhiking.  She showed us were to get coconut bread and pastries (her cousin's house) and were to get Long Island baskets. Known for being the best in the Bahamas! ( and that was at her Aunt's house) So far our favorite Islands are Black Point Settlement and here!! I believe it has a lot to do with the people!!!!

Bought a straw bag made by Sara Adderley
She had goats everywhere!
Look close and you can see the Elizabeth Pearl!...picture taken from the church

We found a few more conch this afternoon...This time we weren't even looking for them!!
All is good....Except for the darn wind. It's still blowing,  had gust of up to 25 knots last night!
